App Push Notifications
What are push notifications?
Push notifications are messages that are sent directly to a user’s device, appearing on locked screens, and added to the notification alerts on a mobile device.
We can send push notifications if the user has the PMD app installed and push notifications enabled on their device. We ask for permission to send push notifications early during unboxing.
Why send push notifications?
Push notifications are a direct channel for engagement with our users. Apps that use push notifications tend to have greater long-term engagement and retention. However, we do want to be careful how many push notifications we send to users, as we don’t want to be a source of alert fatigue.
When should we send push notifications?
- Announcing a new feature release (send to all providers)
- Welcoming new users (sent to providers at particular practices)
- Re-engaging lapsed users (sent to users that haven't used the app recently)
Who can send push notifications?
- Any PMD admin can send a push notification
- All push notification ideas must be vetted to ensure standardization and best practices are met. If you have an idea for a push notification please submit a google form here.

Instructions for sending a "Welcome to PicassoMD" push notification:
- Welcome new users (for now)
- Every morning between 7:00 - 9:00 AM local time, clinical operations team members will receive an email with a Quicksite dashboard view that shows all users who successfully completed registration the day prior.
- The dashboard contains the user name, practice, state, email, and designation as a PCP/specialist.
- Quick note: if the user has not completed registration, they will not show up on this list.
- We will send “Welcome” push notifications to users between 8-8:30 AM.
- Log in to the PMD Web App using your admin login ie) name@picassomd.com
- Navigate to the “Push Notification” tab on the left-hand menu
- Each filter (small checkbox at the top) can either be enabled or disabled. The default state is disabled. If the box is enabled (with a blue checkmark), then you must select an option from the drop-down menu. If you would like to send this message to just a PCP / Specialist but not both, click the check box above and select the desired segment.
- The “App Activity” box filters for the user's last app usage date. For example, if I set the filter to today, users who joined yesterday but haven’t opened the app today will not show up when you count recipients. For welcome push notifications, set the filter to the date the provider joined PMD.
- Leave the “Last Manual Notifications Sent (At Least X Days Ago Blank)
- This functionality will allow you to exclude users who received a PMD push notification within x amount of days. This tool helps us reduce alert fatigue. Don’t worry about this functionality when sending a “Welcome” push notification.
- Add emails if you would like to notify a specific person in that practice. For example, maybe a new provider has joined a practice, but everyone else at that practice has been using PMD for a while.
- Next, add the message title and body.
- For Welcome to PMD push notifications type “PicassoMD” for message title and, “We’re here to help! Try a First Available Curbside for instant specialist access.” for the message body.
- Lastly, choose the “Screen to Open”. This means that when a user taps on the push notification it will take them to the homepage, curbside tab, referrals tab, my team, or account. For Welcome to PMD push notifications, please select “Curbside”.
- For Welcome to PMD push notifications, please select “Curbsides” for the screen to open.
- In order to send the notification, you must count the number of recipients first. Failing to do this will result in a disabled “Send Notification” button (it will appear greyed out).
