How to Send a Direct Referral from the Mobile App

Overview: This article provides an overview of how to send a direct referral from the mobile app.

Providers can send a Referral using the PicassoMD mobile app in 5 simple steps 

(Referral Coordinators and Practice Admins can send a referral on the web):

1. From the Referral screen, click the “New Referral” button located in the lower right corner.  

  1. Next, choose a specialty by tapping the corresponding icon.
    1. Note: When you select a specialty that has subspecialties, the subspecialty screen will appear. However, you can only select one subspecialty. See our article on subspecialties for more details.

  2. Select a Provider

    By default, if you have recent, favorite, or practice favorite providers, they will automatically show up on this screen

  • You can search near any of your office locations or enter an address or even a city to search near. Providers and practices within 50 miles of the address will be shown.
  • Filter providers by accepted insurance carriers
    • If a practice has not indicated what insurance they accept, you will see a gray question mark over the provider or practice's picture when you filter the results.
  • Filter by provider-applied tags
    • Find and send referrals to providers who speak other languages, see geriatric or pediatric patients, or offer home visits.


  1. Once you choose a provider to send the referral to, you can enter your patient’s basic information and choose the acuity level for the referral (Routine vs urgent vs emergent).
    • Routine referrals are those that can be seen in 1-3 weeks. 
    • Urgent referrals should be seen within 1 week.  
    • Emergent referrals are those that need to be completed within 48 hours.  


5. The final step is to confirm the information and send the referral. 

  1. All referrals are sent immediately to the specialist and their associated referral coordinators. A text will be sent to the patient.

  1. When your referral is complete, we'll show you the "All Set" screen. You can either click "Done" to go back to the home screen, or you can send another referral for the same patient. We will copy the patient demographic information, so you can send the patient to another specialty without having to re-enter information.
